Romare Bearden

November 21, 2020 – January 16, 2021

Romare Bearden (American, 1911-1988) had a remarkable career. As one of the most talented artists of the twentieth century, he worked in many different mediums and artistic styles. He is best known for his dramatic collages, two of which appeared on the covers of Fortune and Time magazines in 1968. Bearden also wrote poetry, and designed costumes and sets for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, as well as programs and set designs for Nanette Bearden's Contemporary Dance Theatre. Additionally, the artist composed music for Billy Eckstine and Tito Puente.

The exhibition at HEMPHILL features a group of works on paper, collages, and watercolors exploring the spirited symbolism of this mid-twentieth-century master.
